The Content Life Cycle

According to Mark Traphagen, there's a repeated pattern in the life of a website's content that he dubs the "Content Life Cycle." It involves:

1. Planting: This is the initial stage where you create new content, like blog posts and service pages. Consider it your content seeding phase.

2. Growing: As your content attracts traffic and begins to rank, you should nurture its growth.

3. Decaying: Over time, some content loses relevance or visibility, leading to a decline in engagement.

The focus shouldn't be solely on creating content but understanding this life cycle for continual content improvement and growth.

Strategies for Each Stage

Planting: The Seed for Future Growth

Creating content should start with solid keyword research as it remains the backbone of your content strategy. But, beware—more content does not equal better performance if it lacks quality or relevance. Focus on making your content authoritative and trustworthy.

Pro Tip: Examine the search engine results pages (SERPs) for your target keywords. This will show you what kind of content Google is favoring. Google's "People Also Ask" section can also serve as inspiration for additional content ideas.

Growing: Nurturing What You Have

Pruning: Over time, you'll have content that's redundant, outdated, or trivial. It's essential to prune such content to keep your website healthy, much like trimming dead branches to help a tree thrive.

Splicing: If you have pages getting good traction with multiple keywords, think about creating supplementary content that can target individual keywords specifically. This will spread the love and increase opportunities to rank.

Decaying: The Cycle of Refreshment

Just like most things in life, content ages. Some of your posts will begin to rank poorly. Refreshing these pages with updated information, new keywords, and enhanced user engagement features gives them a new lease on life.

For example, adding multimedia elements can drastically enhance user experience and keep visitors longer on your page. Also, consider the way your page links to and from other resources on your site to create a network that's visibly rich for the audience and the search engines.

Tools and Tips for Growing Your SEO Prowess

Matthew and Mark shared some handy tools to assist in optimizing content:

- Google Search Console: Gives insights into how your site performs on Google's SERPs, providing data on ranking keywords, click-through rates, and more.

- Spark Content Optimizer by SEO Clarity: This free Chrome extension helps analyze both your own site and competitor sites for optimization opportunities.
