Analytics Mania - Google Analytics & Tag Manager

Install Google Tag Manager on WIX (and also GA4)

Install Google Tag Manager on WIX (and also GA4)

Hey there! If you've ever tried to install Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Tag Manager (GTM) on a Wix website, you might have realized it's a bit of a head-scratcher. Don't worry, though! We’re going to break it down and make the process as smooth as butter. So, grab a cup of coffee, kick back, and let's dive into this exciting journey!

Why the Fuss About GTM and GA4?

Before we roll up our sleeves, let's touch upon *why* you might want to do this. Basically, Google Tag Manager allows you to manage your scripts and tags efficiently without diving into your website's code every time. And GA4? It's Google's latest and greatest in analytics—tracking every valuable data point to help you evaluate and boost your business's performance online. Definitely something you don’t want to sleep on!

Getting Started: Wix's Requirements

First things first, if you want to connect Google Tag Manager on your Wix site, you’ll need your own custom domain. What this means is you should be on any of Wix's Premium plans that allow you to connect a custom domain. If you're still rocking the free plan, sadly, GTM’s not gonna work for you (booo!).

Connecting Your Custom Domain

Got your Premium plan? Cool! If you haven’t connected your custom domain yet, I won't hold your hand through that one here, but I've left some valuable resources down below for you to check out. Once you're all set with that fresh, shiny custom domain, you're ready to install Google Tag Manager.

Installing Google Tag Manager

1. Navigate to Marketing Integrations: In the Wix dashboard, go to Marketing & SEO then Marketing Integrations. Found it? Awesome! Sometimes the interface might look a bit different, but keep an eye out for anything mentioning marketing.

2. Connect Google Tag Manager: Click on the "Connect" button next to Google Tag Manager. Then, you’ll click "Add Google Tag Manager" and boom! You're in.

3. Enter Your Container ID: Google Tag Manager will ask for its container ID. If you’ve already created one, grab it! Not sure where to find it? Go to tagmanager.google.com, and you can either copy it directly from there or pick it up from the admin section.

4. Save Settings: Once you’ve pasted the container ID, just hit save, and you’ve got yourself a GTM installed on your Wix site. Cheers to you! 🍾

Testing Your GTM Installation

To ensure things are working the way they should, head back to the GTM interface and click "Preview." Enter your Wix site’s URL, hit connect, and if all’s green, you’re good to go!

Configuring GA4 with Your GTM

Alright, let's remove our posh GTM developer hat and replace it with the GA4 one. Now, since Wix sites are often single-page applications, we need to tweak things a little to get them to play nicely with GA4.

Step-by-Step GA4 Setup

1. Create a GA4 Configuration Tag: In GTM, create a new tag, select GA4 Configuration, and enter your GA4 measurement ID. Remember that you’ need a GA4 property already set up—so hop over to analytics.google.com if you haven’t done that yet.

2. Enable Triggers: For single-page apps like those on Wix, you’ll need special triggers. Create a trigger named "Custom Event" and enter “pageview” for the Event Name.

3. Adding Event Tags: Now, set up another tag in GTM, and this time select the GA4 Event type. Link it with the GA4 Configuration tag you just created, and enter the Event Name as “pageview”. Voila! You’re almost done.

Fine-Tuning Your GA4 Events

Now, let’s tweak those GA4 settings a bit:

- Disable Automatic Pageview Events: In the GA4 data stream, turn off automatic pageviews to avoid tracking duplicates.

- Form Interaction Control: We’re all about using GTM powerfully, so disable those form interactions here as well.

Let’s Test Your GA4 Implementation

To ensure everything’s in tip-top shape, refresh all your previews, submit a sample form on your site, and double-check the DebugView in GA4. Make sure you see all expected tags firing up correctly. If so, you’re golden!

Wrapping Up

So there you have it! You’ve seamlessly integrated Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics 4 right into your Wix masterpiece. Not so daunting anymore, huh?
